The War on Drugs

Paper Summary:

This paper looks at the effectiveness of the war on drugs that has been ongoing in the United States of America. It looks at the country's policies on drugs and how drug offenses are handled, judging if they are effective or not and why. Then it recommends changes in the current policies and laws or new policies and laws that might better combat the nation's drug problem. Finally, it takes a look at any drawbacks there might be to these recommended changes.

"Since the explosion of crack cocaine in the inner cities of the United States, there have been several policies enacted to better combat the rising use of drugs in the country, as well as the crime that has come with it. This became known as, both seriously and mocked, the "War on Drugs." Besides criminalizing the use of many controlled substances, targeting users for their use or possession of said substances and not even solely for any acts that possession, distribution, or consumption might influence or cause, this drug war necessitated the creation of a drug court system. The drug courts were created in order to better handle the huge influx of offenders that were being pinpointed, arrested, and prosecuted because of stricter drug laws."
