Paper Summary:

A look at the "War on Drugs", which represents the intention and dedication of the government to stop the illegal trafficking of drugs into the U.S. and to provide education and prevention in society. This paper looks at the way this program works and its effect on society today.

From the Paper:

"Americans are always worried about being happy. Happiness is a virtue that can come in many forms. One of these forms is the legal drugs such as Prozac, Valium, Xanax, and Percodan. These pills, however, are primarily meant for the rich since they cost $75 - $100 for a prescription, plus the expense of the visit to the doctor. Poor people cannot afford the prescription medicine or the visit to the doctor, so they become happy by using local "street" drugs. These would include the illegal versions of happiness such as marijuana, ecstasy, crack, and or cocaine. Any person who is caught selling, buying, or using them is arrested. So Americans are allowed to feel good but if they feel good without a prescription, they have to go jail. This is one example of how the "war on drugs" discriminates against society. The government wants the habit of drugs to be restricted solely for the upper class, primarily only for those who can afford a legal prescription or a high priced defense attorney. For those who cannot afford prescription or an attorney, they become lost and abused within the prison population."
