Essay (General) # 64553 :: The Switch in Public Policy from a Proactive War?
A Social Darwinism approach to understanding why the U.S. is losing its declared war on drugs and whether it will lose the war against terror.
Written in 2006; 2,677 words; 15 sources; APA; $ 80.95
Paper Summary:
This paper considers how the theory of Social Darwinism can be applied to understanding the U.S. war on drugs and terror. The paper explains that the theory of Social Darwinism contends that people that work hardest and most competently are the most successful and the least competent are the losers in society. The paper also explains that when this theory is applied to the U.S. war on drugs and terror, it falls short of explaining why the U.S. is losing the war on drugs and why terrorists are largely successful in meeting their objectives. The paper finds that rather than hard work and competence, having a clear set of objectives and an understanding of those objectives is really what makes people successful.

From the Paper:
"One such issue arises from the link between drugs and terrorism. By cultivating a causal relationship between the War on Drugs and Terrorism, the administration is reigniting the age-old link between the War on Drugs and struggles against outsiders, subversives, communists, and now terrorists. Drugs and Terror are thus positioned together within a problem statement, assuming a gravity that promotes demand for an effective, unified response. Dahliah Heller Notes: "There is, of course, much historical irony in this newly identified relationship. At the turn of this century, Taliban actions to reduce poppy growing and opium production in Afghanistan were internationally recognized as significant and successful. In contrast, after 9/11 rumors spread that Afghan heroin proffered by bin Laden's networks had been planned to glut the world market. However, no evidence has ever been produced to substantiate this speculation." (2002)"
