Historians are in general agreement that Eisenhower's reaction to the Suez Canal crisis was influenced by the realities of geopolitics at the height of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. Eisenhower reacted angrily to the Suez Canal crisis primarily because his highest foreign policy priority was the containment of communism, but this strategic goal was undermined by the military actions undertaken by Great Britain and France in the Middle East in 1956. "
