The Self and One's Socialization
A discussion of the relationship between the self and socialization.
1,125 words (approx. 4.5 pages) | 6 sources | 2005 United States

Paper Summary:

Paper refers to Berger and Luckmann, and R Jenkins, in discussing the old question of whether the social self shaped socialization, or the other way around. The paper mentions categorising trends in sociology that may reduce attention to the particular. The paper also discusses the gap between personal and social self as known in Western cultures versus in non-Western cultures, language, religious consciousness and the General Diversity of humanity as will defy sociological theory.

From the Paper:

"The Social Self and One's Socialization. Introduction An endless debate seems present in Sociology, and in Psychology, too, to do with whether one's social self influences the experience one has of socialization, as in the kinds of socialization that occur, or whether socialization shapes one's social self, in the first place. Berger & Luckmann refer to both processes, in a dynamic view of the person in relation to the surrounding society, as the individual, "simultaneously externalizes his own being into the social world and internalizes it as an objective reality". (p. 129)"
