The Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 constituted the beginning of the War on Poverty, with numerous subsequent acts being passed that furthered the war efforts. There were included in these acts, legislation encompassing programs such as civil rights, voting rights, aid to public schools, nutrition programs, health insurance for the elderly, community action programs, the Job Corps training program for high school dropouts and unemployed teenagers, legal services for the poor, Head Start, and VISTA.
