"Saudi Arabia, which occupies approximately four-fifths of the Arabian peninsula, is estimated to have more than one-fifth of all proven free-world oil reserves (U.S. Department of State [USDS] 5). The country is largely dependent on the exploration, transportation and exporting of oil and oil products, and has assumed a key role in political and economic affairs of the region. At the heart of the Saudi Arabian oil industry is a network of pipelines which transverse the country.
