In this article, the writer examines the role of the state and how it impacts society in terms of creating and/or dismantling social class order. "In the 1800's the role of the government was limited by the classical liberals under the banner of laissez-faire ("hands off"), free trade, and rights of property and contract. Under capitalism, the role of state is to protect the rights of individuals and the masses. The state is also responsible for protecting legislature from the threat of violence and fraud. However, after the turn of the century modern liberals focused their efforts on increasing the government's power in terms of regulating private economic activity and transfer wealth among its citizens."
