Paper Summary:

This paper is an analysis of the scholarly literature concerning the events that resulted in the Reformation of 1517, including religious, political, and social issues. Events discussed include the Crusades and the Renaissance. It also discusses how, if these events had not caused it, other equally powerful forces would have developed to take their place to address the social, political, and religious inequities of the time. The events are described in historical and geographical context, followed by a summary of the research in the conclusion.

From the Paper:

"The Crusades were originally called armed pilgrimages. The research shows that the word crusade comes from the Latin word crux, meaning cross. The members of the many expeditions sewed the symbol of the cross on their clothing. The saying, "To take up the cross" meant to become a crusader. According to one authority, the First Crusade had been a tremendous success. "It was to be the only crusade to succeed in its objectives" (Knox, n. pag.). Fighting wars was expensive work, though, and England was no great power in the Middle Ages. "The country was small, poor, backward, lacking in natural resources, and on the edge of the European community.""
