By the early eighteenth century slavery was legal throughout America and was the primary source of labor in the South. Many of our nation's founding fathers were slaveholders. Thomas Jefferson, who wrote the Declaration of Independence, and Patrick Henry, who is famous for saying, ?Give me liberty or give me death!? were slave owners. Slavery was such a vital force eight of our first twelve presidents even owned slaves. "
