Paper Summary:

This paper explores the many theories and ways of teaching as well as the benefits and problems with each style and method. The writer contends that students today are only grasping a part of a concept, for example: Students may be able to read but they do not understand what is written, a pupil might know how to use a calculator but not know how to divide on paper. It is imperative that educators learn the four basic styles of learning which are comprised of analytical, common sense, imaginative and dynamic learning. This paper stresses the importance of applying constructive teaching when assessing their students style of learning. Recognizing these learning styles is crucial for overall success. This paper describes the various strategies and theories available which maximize the students' ability to learn. This paper discusses the serious challenges facing today's philosophy of education as well as the trend that seems to be swinging back in the direction of traditional teaching methods.

From the Paper:

"For a long time education has focused on child oriented theories of education, something called progressive education. Teachers have been encouraged to believe that children learn best when they find things out for themselves and that didactic (academic) teaching is inappropriate and inefficient. In applying these theories, a teacher's job is more to help children to become independent learners than to teach the basic skills and subjects that are necessary to be well educated. The result of this style of teaching has been ill prepared students; when they get to the college level, many are unprepared and do not have the critical skills needed to thrive in a post-secondary environment or in the work place."
