It has its roots based in the cultural and religious practices of bygone eras and is viewed by most as being based on the caring, compassionate and moral nature of females within its society. However, history shows that this is not entirely accurate, that prior to Florence Nightingale, mid-nineteenth century, there was a definite lack of care, that nurses where often callous and cruel, displaying little respect to the rights and dignity of their patients.
