Both today and from a historical perspective, religions of all types have flown in the face of their manifestos, playing key roles in discrimination, famine, war, and genocide. Even relatively recent events, such as the refusal of the Catholic Church to tolerate gays and lesbians as well as the Rwandan genocide and 9/11, point to religion as a catalyst that has made the state of things progressively worse. Given that, there is no need for religion in civilized society."
