Paper Summary:
The paper investigates whether musicians develop mental disorders due to the stress of their career, or if people who are more likely to develop mental disorders cling to the profession of music. The paper gives explanations of mental illnesses and contributing factors, as well as gives examples of specific composers who suffer from severe mental illness.
From the Paper:
"Throughout the study of music, many famous musical composers are known to have had severe mental disorders, commonly depression and bipolar disorder. While studying these composers, it is intriguing to learn that behind the musical masterpieces often lie severely depressed artists seeking desperately to express themselves or enrich the lives of those that appreciate their music. The purpose of this paper is to determine whether composers develop depression because of what they do, or if the depressed seek composition as a career and source of consolation. To discover if composers acquire the disease or already have it when they start composing, it is important to first understand mental disorders."
