The Ionian Investigations
An examination of the effect of Ionian Greece on modern science and philosophy.
1,350 words (approx. 5.4 pages) | 1 source | 2005 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper analyzes how the origins of what we know today as science and philosophy lie on the Ionian coast of Asia Minor, with thinkers such as Thales Anaximander and Anaximenes in the sixth and fifth centuries. The paper further discusses how, although it is unclear why Greek city state colonies such as Miletus became centers for early philosophical and speculative thought, it is clear the combination of certain factors--the absence of a monolithic religion, relative freedom of thought, close contact with Near East civilizations, a leisured class, and a tradition of public debate and discussion--seems to have created an atmosphere that made Ionian Greece an intellectual hot spot.
