Ethics in the automotive industry have been debated at least since the mid-1960s when Ralph Nader published his book on the dangers of the Corvair automobile, charging that General Motors was knowingly developing and selling a poorly designed vehicle. In the pinto case, the issue raised addressed product liability, and the Ford Pinto was deemed dangerous because of a gas tank that could explode in even the most minor impact.
