The Fall of France in 1940
An historical paper looking at the battles that led up to the fall of France in 1940 in WWII.
2,315 words (approx. 9.3 pages) | 2 sources | MLA | 2004

Paper Summary:

This paper describes the history surrounding the beginning of WWII and the military situation of the main countries involved in the war. It discusses the histories of France and Germany, their development since WWI, and explains how and why Germany managed to overrun France in 1940.

From the Paper:

"For a time after the First World War, France was looked upon as having the greatest army in the world. They had fought bravely during the Great War and held the German invaders for years until an armistice was finally signed ending the war. Through the Treaty of Versailles, they severely crippled the German ability to develop a strong, standing army. It seemed France would become the dominant power in Europe; unrivaled by any of its neighbors. But this was not to be. A powerful dictator known as Adolf Hitler rose to power in Germany and began to reshape the country into a powerful and potentially aggressive nation. Internal problems in France made it difficult to deal directly with this problem. The French tried to prepare for another war with Germany, but its attempts were futile. Once war had begun, the western front keeping the Germans out of France fell in six days; France itself fell in a matter of weeks."
