This essay examines some of the events that took place in China since the middle of the 19th century and that led to the triumph of the Chinese Communist party after World War II. The essay focuses on the factors that led to the failure of the Chinese Nationalist party (Guomindang) to consolidate its support amongst the Chinese people.
