"The media's involvement and influence in war has become more profound throughout the course of history. This discussion will be strictly limited to the role that the media played during the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. These wars are especially pivotal in regards to the media's influence. The Civil War represents the first major American conflict in which the media emerged as a powerful force that shaped the war in its own right. New technologies - like the telegraph - permitted faster reporting and permitted war correspondents to have a greater influence on the direction and outcome of the conflict. The Spanish American War, some years later and by extension, actually represents the first conflict in American history that was largely instigated and perpetuated by the media."
