This paper discusses the statement that, because the Economic and Monetary Union in Europe was largely the offspring of politics, it is doomed to failure. While accepting the assumption of political birth, the paper argues that the conclusion is not necessarily so and that the long-term success or failure of the EMU depends on events that have yet to take place. The paper concludes that there is a good likelihood that the EMU will succeed in some form or other.
