Because the long-term effects of divorce are more substantial than the short-term, it is important to understand how divorce alters the lives of adolescents in dramatic ways. Incidents of increased suicide risk, depression, substance abuse, diminished social skills and increased failures in interpersonal relations are examples of multiple effects that increase over time.
