A look at PostScript, the language of choice for graphical output for printing applications.
768 words (approx. 3.1 pages) | 5 sources | MLA | 2004 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper looks at the development, features, and advantages of the printing application language, PostScript, as well as how the language came into fruition.

From the Paper:

"In 1978, Warnock joined Xerox PARC to work with Martin Newell and together they rewrote Design System to create JaM, used for VLSI design and the investigation of type and graphics printing and which later evolved into the expanded system Interpress (PostScript pp). In 1982, Warnock and Chuck Geschke founded Adobe Systems and in 1985 began selling a simpler version of Interpress as PostScript (PostScript pp). That same year, after being urged by Steve Jobs to adapt PostScript to be used as the language for driving laser printers, which was added to a canon printing engine to create the LaserWriter, the Apple LaserWriter became the first printer to ship with PostScript, beginning the desktop publishing revolution (PostScript pp). Due to the combination of technical merits and widespread availability, PostScript became the language of choice for graphical output for printing applications (PostScript pp)."
