The Debate about Globalization

Paper Summary:

This paper explores the pros and cons of globalization as well as the 'strategic outcomes' of certain policy decisions based upon various theoretical considerations. The paper acknowledges the ambivalent nature of globalization and acknowledges the difficult decisions confronting state actors in a globalized market. The paper concludes by suggesting that greater political will at the supra-national level may alleviate some of the problems associated with globalization.

"This is a one-page proposal describing globalization and the direction of subsequent research. Globalization certainly sparks a great deal of controversy: on one hand, it offers the promise of improved living standards in developing countries, improved profit margins in large corporations, and savings to consumers; on the other hand, globalization has been accused of environmental damage, damage to the social fabric of communities, and of doing considerable harm to workers - both those in Western European and North American countries, and those in other lands."
