As a part of the transition between the two PDC coalition periods, the economic policies of the Pinochet dictatorship period from 1973 to 1990 are discussed in this paper. The economic policies of this period are important to this analysis, as they are the policies that were inherited by the contemporary PDC-led coalition in Chile. The economic policies and outcomes of the PDC-led coalition governments during the Post-Pinochet period from 1990 through the current time are also discussed in this paper. Both the structure of the coalitions in terms of political parties and the structure of the coalitions within the context of the alignments within the PDC are discussed. The paper includes charts.
From the Paper:
"Another major reason for Chile's economic collapse was the absence of governmental supervision over the deregulation of the financial sector. Although government regulations prohibited the concentration of ownership of the newly privatized commercial banks, government regulators allowed economic consortiums to circumvent the rules. These consortiums used acquired banks to acquire firms under the privatization program and to make loans to firms they controlled. "These loans were eventually rolled over, rather than recognized as losses, as these firms encountered financial difficulties.""
