This paper examines the concept of telecommuting, an arrangement by which people work at home using a computer and telephone, transmitting work material to a business office by means of a modem and telephone lines, also known as telework. It analyzes some of the advantages and disadvantages, in particular for the software development firm such as the increased global and national access to a wider pool of skilled and lower cost labor and professional services for the corporation. It also examines benefits such as lower overhead and more effective cyber management in virtual global corporations.
From the Paper:
"Telecommuting is not without some problems. It gives rise to a number of troublesome issues. There are concerns about the application of workplace rules. (Nilles 2000) The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) does not have the same power and rights in the home that it does in the traditional workplace. A relatively recent attempt by OSHA to hold large corporations liable for "unsafe" home working conditions ended in a mess, with the top OSHA administrator totally retreating from this position. Issues of health standards, child labor laws, and excessive work hours are difficult to enforce with regard to telecommuting workers carried out within the home workplace. The AFL-CIO has also suggested that telecommuting has become yet another means of breaking the force of unions."
