Paper Summary:
Today, through a more compassionate and scientific understanding, schizophrenia has become a recognizable disease characterized by a "split" from rational thinking and emotion. his paper deals with the disease of schizophrenia from the standpoint of definition, causes, treatment, and support, with reference to the adolescent population.
From the Paper:
"When attempting to make a diagnosis, albeit for adolescents or adults, there must first be an exclusion of other illnesses such as brain tumors, metabolic disturbances, drug and alcohol abuse, and epilepsy. Within the adolescent population the symptoms are usually recognizable at the prodromal level and the indicators are social withdrawal, a significant weakening in functioning, an observable depressed mood, a lack of concentration in school, oftentimes sleep instability, lack of motivation, anxiety, and even suspiciousness (Weller, 2000). As the disease develops teenagers oftentimes develop attenuated schizophrenic-like symptoms such as exhibiting peculiar behaviors, exaggerated speech, fantasy-like thinking, and odd perceptual experiences."
