Paper Summary:
With the growth of new technologies and advancements comes the challenging question of what is ethically right and wrong. As in the change of our society (technically), we also see a gradual change in what we perceive as ethically correct. This paper uses an example of a physician who faces a dilemma of telling his patient some irrelevant information he found through his DNA.
From the Paper:
"This scenario, however, in terms of what was discovered is not the same as the example of a physician accidentally discovering the presence of cancer, a reality that would require the doctor, ethically, to inform the patient. (Yeo & Mitchell:2001:141) If this was the unexpected finding of labwork or other examination, it would be morally imperative for the physician to inform the patient that a different condition existed for which treatment was indicated. Should a nurse know of the situation and a doctor not have responded, he or she would be ethically and morally bound to let the patient know of a second, unexpected health problem that required immediate attention."
