In the United States the growth of the industrial era really began with national efforts at improvement of means of communication. Improved transportation meant that greater amounts of products could be moved long distances, faster, on a consistent schedule, and at cheaper rates than ever before. Starting with the canal and primitive but improved road systems of the first quarter of the 19th century, improvements in transportation really impacted the growth of the American industrial economy with the advent of interlinked railroad lines and the improved locomotive of the 1830s and 40s. Alfred D.
