"Taiwan is an island that houses the Republic of China, a nation that considers itself different from the People's Republic of China, 100 miles across the Formosa Strait. It claims the right to rule all China from its capitol city of Taipei. The majority of Taiwanese are ethnic (Han) Chinese who began to emigrate to Taiwan in the 15th century. A small number (about 265,000) are Kiaoshan aborigines. Taiwan remained in Japanese hands until 1945, when Chiang Kai-Shek and the Nationalists were ousted from mainland CHINA by the Communists.
