This paper examines how the number of ways in which new systems may be designed has multiplied exponentially over the last several years and how there are accepted methodologies that accompany these systems? development. It looks at how the trends that have most affected system development have been the scope of the technology involved and the transition from proprietary software to commercially available software. It also shows how the chief drawback of this transition is that information is considerably less secure than it had been in the past. However, commercially available encryption technologies have played a significant role in delineating this fault.

"The rapid prototype model, also called rapid application development, has particular uses. It is predicated on the rapid completion of a workable model that can then be tested for errors. Consumer software developers that issue a lot of beta software to voluntary beta testers often use this model. The prototype is the key part of the requirements determination phase, and may be created using less expensive tools than those used to create the final product. In a systems environment, this might mean a small "mock" database running on a personal computer. Once the prototype is approved, it is discarded and the "real" software is written."
