This paper reports on experiments addressing the issue of developing synthetic analogs of erythropoietin, a protein hormone produced by the kidney that stimulates the production of red blood cells. The hormone is given to patients suffering from kidney failure when they develop anemia, which occurs primarily because their production of erythropoietin is abnormally low. The company has produced an analog that stimulates red blood cell production and so mimics the action of erythropoietin. The analog has been derived from bone marrow cells in culture.
