Paper Summary:
Supranationalism, a concept first formed by Winston Churchill after WWII, manifested itself after the fall of the Berlin Wall at the end of the 1980's in Europe. This desire for "one true Europe" has had a specific influence on films coming out of Europe during the last ten years, and this paper goes into detail describing the influence of supranationalism. Using specific film examples from a variety of countries, this paper shows how supranational ideals have been presented in the film medium.
From the Paper:
"Supranationalism has been a concept that has been talked about, attempted, and argued upon in Europe ever since Winston Churchill came up with it shortly after World War II, but it never really found its foothold until after the Maastricht Treaty was issued in 1992. At that point, the Cold War was over, and Communism in Europe was finally dead, after slowly withering away with the fall of the Berlin Wall. After the wall came down and the East and West were united once again, there was a strong desire for supranationalism, for "one true Europe." Unfortunately, it wasn't as easy of a process as anyone would have thought, for feelings of alienation, and nationalism were ever present to stand in the way of true unification. Supranationalism is occurring today though, slowly but surely, not only in Europe, but around the whole world, as new technological mediums such as television, cellular phones, and of course, the internet, are connecting different nations with one another all across the globe. However, this paper is about the supranationalism in Europe, specifically its influence on film, so that is what we are going to focus on."
