Paper Summary:
This paper examines the concepts of self-control, self-efficacy, and self-handicapping and how they are all linked in various ways. The paper then explores how these concepts relate to a specific social problem: substance abuse.
From the Paper:
"Self-efficacy, or self-worth, can be developed by four main sources of influence. Mastery of experience is the first influence. This is simply developing a sense of efficacy through one's own successes. Encountering many successes build a strong belief in one's own efficacy. Failures tend to undermine self-efficacy. However, those who always experience success easily will expect it all the time and will be discouraged by failure. Efficacy is more resilient if one learns how to succeed despite obstacles to success, through persevering."
