This paper describes the recent advances in the understanding of intra- and extracellular factors in tumor proliferation. A rapidly expanding aspect with regard to tumor pathogenesis is the micro-environment created by the tumor. Several factors that inhibit lymphocyte activation and proliferation are discussed. Future oncological treatment as an application of these new findings suggests a tumor-specific, multi-targeted approach should be adapted.

"In recent years, many factors in the proliferation of cancer cells has advanced to the point that more questions are being raised than answered. One of these is that several micro-environmental factors are observed to be playing a more active role in oncogenesis. This goes without saying that the most prevalent cancer-related mortalities then and now continue to be lung, breast, colon and prostate cancer. This leads to the question of whether or not present inquiries and treatments comprehend the ever-expanding list of intra- and extracellular mechanisms at work in tumor cell environments. Micro-environments serve to provide cells in general a physiologically neutral, nutrient-rich environment along with stable extracellular support. "
