Paper Summary:

This paper begins with an examination of the early life of Saint Ignatius, which would not have given any indication that he was destined for sainthood. The author then discusses a seminal life event, and describes how Ignatius radically redirected his life in early adulthood, eventually rising to religious greatness.

From the Paper:

"For those who knew him in the early part of his life, Ignatius certainly did not seem destined for sainthood. In fact, he was, in many respects, a modern-day juvenile delinquent. Born in 1491 at the castle Loyola in northern Spain, he was originally made a cleric, though for reasons unknown, he was released from this obligation and sent to live with Juan Velasquez de Cuellar. Velasquez was contador mayor to Ferdinande and Isabella, and as a result, Ignatius became a courtier. He was extravagant about his hair and dress, contentious, addicted to gambling, and consumed with the desire for glory as well as women. He often engaged in swordplay and even became involved in a dispute with another family, which would eventually lead to an arrest and a lengthy trial. "
