"Play-based interventions have been used for the treatment of various problems facing children, and one of the areas where this type of treatment has been applied is with children with autism spectrum disorder and/or learning and communication disorders. Play is seen as an ideal way to get children to participate, and play also serves as a way of getting those children to act out some of their problems or to fantasize in a way that can be beneficial to them in the long term. Casby (2003) cites research showing that children with autism exhibit more restrictive play patterns, play less, and spend more time in off-task behaviors than do typically developing children or children with mental retardation or Down syndrome. Children with developmental/specific language impairment demonstrate play performances that are superior to those of their linguistically matched (and thus younger) typically developing peers. "
