↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This paper cites specific examples of students and their special needs to illustrate the great variety of needs that special education programs must address. Mentally handicapped, mentally gifted, and different age-range cases are discussed, and the variety of programs in place to assist 'exceptional' students are described.

From the Paper:

"A recent study conducted by the Michigan University revealed that more than 20% of American first-graders have severe reading difficulties (Laurence McQuillan, USA Today July 26, 2001 cited in Education Watch 9/25/01). Its results say that nearly 3 out of 4 of these first-graders are likely to remain poor readers and that more than 10 million American children today have reading problems. Furthermore, the latest report from the National Center for Educational Statistics reveals that the performance gap between those on top and those at the bottom has widened in the last eight years (Sweet 2001). Add to these, current knowledge says that the failure to read has devastating effects on one's self-esteem, social development, education and chances at meaningful work."
