Somalia

This paper discusses the current status of Somalia and reports that Somalia is found to be one of the most lawless countries in the world with no central government, no national currency and little infrastructure development. Furthermore, the paper portrays how Somalia is ruled by several warlord factions and only complicated by the presence of a central government that is central in name only.

"Somalia was previously recognized as the Somali Democratic Republic but suffered political upheaval in 1991 and has, since then, been characterized by lawlessness, factionalized rule and a complete political breakdown. Somalia is located on the eastern coast of the African continent and borders both the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. Inland Somalia is bordered by Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti and its foreign relations both regionally and internationally are relatively non-existent (Duyvesteyn). Somalia exists solely as a geographic entity since it lacks a unifying central government, no national or unifying currency and otherwise no real national identity. It is ruled in part by regional authorities situated in Somaliland in the northwest and Puntland towards the south which geographically split the country and various other areas are controlled by warlords (Duyvesteyn)."
