Sociology and the Increasing Divorce Rate

Paper Summary:

This paper examines how there are two different approaches to analyzing the increasing divorce rate. One is to study the issue using a sociological style. The other is from a common sense stance. It looks at how the common sense view is usually an ethnocentric view and often uses superficial observations as the basis for its determination of analysis and how the sociological viewpoint takes a much larger view and analyzes the issue from the perspective of what the problem says about society as a whole. It attempts to show how analyzing the increasing divorce rate from the perspective of the sensibilities of the sociological imagination lets us examine the issue from different standpoints.

"The cultural sensibility is a very pervasive component of the sociological imagination because culture can influence the other three components as well as being a determining factor within itself. During the preceding sixty years the social stigma of divorce has been eroded from our culture. As divorce became a more common method to dissolve failing relationships, the blame for the failed relationship also began to be removed from the woman. This allowed for the further removal of the stigma of divorce. No longer were divorced women looked down upon as being unsuitable mates due to being perceived as "loose" or otherwise unfit as wives. "
