Universally, social mobility data shows that a person's social opportunity for mobility differ according to (a) parental socio economic status and (b) gender. The key variables can be found in the social structure and degree of stratification in industrialized societies, societies with economies sufficiently advanced so that the distribution of wealth is more changeable than is common in developing societies.
