Social Influences on Behavior

Paper Summary:

This paper reviews two personal situations relating to issues of groupthink, discrimination, prejudice and the sociological implications of each. The first situation was work related and the second familial in nature. Each situation is discussed and assessed relative to the situation. Individual harm, the manner in which each participant was harmed and the cultural influences are explored.

"Recently, I was up for a major promotion at work in a retail setting to the position of department manager/team leader. The workplace had a strong emphasis on their managers being team leaders not "managers." I had the loyalty of my entire department, I knew more about the product selection, ordering process, management in general, interpersonal relations, etc. than the existing assistant department team leader, who was my only competition. Other members of our team did not respect or even like the assistant team leader and she antagonized everyone with a strongly threatening manner. She was single black mother of a young infant and played "the race card" in her interview and required presentation in order to get the job.
