"Television soap operas have been a staple of the medium since it was invented, and before that soap operas were a major component in daytime programming on radio. There is no doubt that soap operas transmit values to the viewership, but the issue is whether those values are positive or negative. Some researchers believe that soap operas are influential in transmitting values, attitudes about lifestyle, and sexual information to youthful viewers, for instance, and the soap producers themselves often claim this and point to attempts to include information about AIDS, unwanted pregnancy, abortion, and the harmful effects of teenage sex in their shows as proof that they are being socially responsible and are thus imparting a valuable message.
