From the Paper:

" Political Situation in Singapore
Singapore was a British colony until the late 1950s and early 1960s, when it was granted independence, first in internal matters and then in foreign affairs. Soon after being granted the right to govern itself internally, it integrated with Malaysia, also a former British colony. This lasted only four years; in 1965 the Malaysian parliament voted to separate the two states ("U.S. Library of ..." 47-57). Since that time, Singapore has been dominated by one man: Lee Kuan Yew. One of the principal agitators for independence from Britain, leader of the People's Action Party (PAP) since its inception in 1954, and prime minister from 1959 until 1990, Lee is currently a ."senior minister" in the cabinet and secretary-general of the PAP (Anonymous 25)."
