Found mainly on the island of Japan, the shrine is a place of worship of the Shinto religion by the public as well as a place of religious practice and represents the home of a deity. The paper discusses the numerous Shinto shrines in Japan, the most famous being the Shrine of Ise but generally big or small, every community has their own shrine which is dedicated to the locally significant deity.
