"Connolly's analysis of Shakespeare's Hamlet is surrounded by the theory of what he describes as the `double man.' He begins with questioning why Shakespeare created in Hamlet the element of madness. It is well known that Shakespeare borrowed ideas from other sources, but Connolly notes that his source had different reasons for placing this strain of madness in Hamlet. Therefore, as ultimately through Shakespeare's version, it is uncertain as to why he included this madness. Moving on to describe his theory of the `double man,' Connolly states that by way "of further definition, the two sides of the double man are these: one is brave, honorable, strong, inclined to be conventional and not too bright, while the other is the devious character . . . who places intelligence, even a dark intelligence, above mere honor" (Connolly 31).
