The paper discusses how Somerville examines the scientific discourses of the late 19th and early 20th centuries on race which became the basis for sexologists and various medical experts to develop models of homosexuality. Somerville expands on the same link between sexual and racial anxieties that was first developed by Havelock Ellis. The paper explains that his thesis is that while gender subordination and various ideologies of gender help to explain the construction of homosexuality, a discourse on homosexuality coincided with race in the United States since at precisely that same time racial segregation was beginning.
