Fisher (1998) stated that two important factors"internal and external stimuli""influence the interpretations that guide communications" (pp. 237-238). With respect to interpersonal communication, Fisher (1998) noted that (1) human attention is selective and that individuals seek ?congruence between ? internal state, behavior, and interpretations? through "selectively perceiving" (p. 239).
