Fisher (1998) stated that two important factors "internal and external stimuli" influence the interpretations that guide communications? (pp. 237-238). With respect to interpersonal communication, Fisher (1998) noted that (1) human attention is selective and that individuals seek "congruence between - internal state, behavior, and interpretations" through "selectively perceiving" (p. 239).
