Paper Summary:
This paper reviews how the twentieth century has shown us some successful examples, as well as some tragic examples, of countries that are composed of multiple ethnic groups. It discusses how even though there are examples of successful nations comprising diverse ethnic groups, what we lack is an understanding of just how to go about creating a successful nation out of diverse ethnic groups. Because the particular history and national character of any particular nation or ethnic group defies simplistic classification and formulization, it creates its own unique entity. The paper reviews India as an example of a country with a rich and diverse ethnic heritage, but it has been plagued by the legacy of its colonial past, economic inequities, and ethnic/religious rivalries.
