By the end of the nineteenth century, American society had already seen many incredible technological advances, which were greatly influencing the way of life. At this time, many scientific and technological journals were being published which kept the interested scientists and technicians informed on the latest advances and breakthroughs in the field of inventions. This paper shows that other journals such as McClure's Magazine were aimed at the average American citizen who simply enjoyed leisure reading. Yet, this magazine explored the advances being made in science and technology far greater than a magazine of comparable interest today. This paper shows how McClure's Magazine, in the late nineteenth century, examined topics in science and technology as well as fiction, poetry, politics and life in society.

"As the United State progressed into an industrialized nation, the general public was overwhelmed at the rate new inventions influenced their lives and made many jobs easier. When Baker wrote his article on "The Automobile in Common Use," he presented the automobile as another remarkable invention that would affect most everyone. Although the technology involved in running an automobile is complex, he set forth to explain how it works in common language for an average reader to be able to understand. Baker succeeded in doing this and at the same time he glorified the machine. He realized the profound impact the automobile would have on society when the technology was perfected and he attempted to imagine what life with automobiles would be like in five to ten years at a touring station."
