Thus, the incident serves as a case study in the purported effectiveness of such measures in promoting school safety. Further, the Smithson case is also illustrative of the inadequacy of punitive measures in controlling and preventing violence in schools. For, it is unlikely, that disciplinary actions such as expulsion succeed in preventing violence from occurring in the future."
